Whale Minefield...

I assure you there are probably 15-20 whales in the area of this picture.   Most of the time we just see a spout or maybe a tail.   This morning, there were spouts, backs, tails all over the place.   Too bad you can't really see any of them in this picture.   Welcome to whale watching in Alaska!

Maybe you can spot one in this photo.   See the black spot in the middle of the photo just below where the water meets the land?   That's a humpback whale's tail.   When you see the tails, that generally means they are diving deep, and you won't see them again for a while.

Chorizo Scramble for breakfast, then a bit of clean-up and preparation and we are ready to retrieve the anchor and be underway.

We departed Ell Cove leaving only one fishing boat in the anchorage.   We are headed to Appleton Cove in Rodman Bay on Baranof Island.   This is the same island that the town of Sitka is on, but Sitka is on the other, Pacific, side.   Sitka is tomorrow's destination.

I noticed this hitchhiker as we were underway.   Nature comes in all forms!   Usually up here, the predominate insect visitors are in the form of black flies.   They aren't harmful, but they are highly annoying.

Other than all the whales out today, our short 30-mile trip was pretty uneventful.   Here is a picture of us entering Appleton Cove.   Note the sucky weather.   Overcast, fog, rain, and wind.   Not my favorite.

Dinner was a mash-together Chicken Orange Curry.   I say orange, because it started out as yellow curry, but it needed more oomph, so I added red curry to it.  With 6 Thai chili's sliced and sauteed into the mix, it was pretty spicy!

Dinner was appreciated by my adoring fan!   At least I hope it was appreciated, and for that matter, I hope she is adoring...

After dinner we saw a brown (grizzly) bear ashore.   They are really hard to spot from a distance as they look just like slow moving rocks...

The rock-like looking thing just above the bank in the middle of the picture is the bear in question.

  1. How long will you be hanging out in Sitka? And are the boys going to be able to join you on this trip at any point?

  2. We will be in Sitka and the surrounding area until 7/13 at which point we will head back "inside" to Petersburg to, hopefully, see the Comte Glacier. Ross will join us when we get back to Ketchikan at the end of July and ride back to Seattle.
